Today, we’re talking about the delicacy of sales leads.

When you’re looking for your first 10 customers, every lead feels like a beautiful and unique snowflake worthy of preservation no matter what. Not so.

1. It’s ok to ask a sales lead for what you think is a high price, while being prepared to negotiate down. You’ll be amazed at how often people accept your first price and I’ve never heard of a potential customer being so offended by a price, they close off all communications.

2. It’s ok to push a free trial customer to a decision. Letting free trials go on and on devalues your product and diverts your focus from leads that may actually convert. If they need your product, they will let you know as soon as you turn it off.

3. It’s ok to say no to a potential customer that isn’t a good fit. Startups receive requests from all kinds of different customers, you’ll need to focus on a narrow customer profile to be successful. Accepting customers that are not a fit, will result in a bad experience for both sides.
